What exactly is hypnosis (trance)? Can I be hypnotised or made to do things against my will?

Trance is very natural and you cannot be hypnotised against your will. Contrary to what you might have seen on TV with stage hypnotists – hypnosis is not mind control! Trance used during clinical hypnotherapy is very different from what we might see in stage hypnosis.

We all go in and out of trance naturally ourselves each day, for example if we’re out for a walk, reading a book, or even washing the dishes! We do it all of the time. When we’re in this relaxed state our brains are actually working hard to figure out our future actions and choices about things, which helps us to come up with our own solutions to day-to-day problems.

You cannot be made to do anything against your will during hypnosis. When we are in the relaxed state of trance, we are still in control and we process and make decisions about whether information or suggestions are helpful to us, and anything which does not reflect our own wishes and values is rejected by the mind.

Does online hypnotherapy work in the same way as face to face hypnotherapy?

Yes, absolutely. Hypnotherapy online is equally as effective as hypnotherapy which is face to face. It also offers clients a great deal of flexibility, so there’s no travel inconvenience and more opportunity to schedule appointments that fit around your day.

You can enjoy therapy from the comfort of your own home, feeling comfortable and relaxed – and if you have a dog or a cat they can be nearby too; it’s always a welcome sight when I see (and hear!) clients dogs snoozing soundly in the background!

Online sessions are conducted via Zoom, which is a safe and confidential online platform. It’s easy to use and I’m happy to help you set this up and get started if required. You’ll need a secure and reliable internet connection, and be in a quiet room to maintain your privacy.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different, but generally people need between 8 – 12 sessions in total.

For clients with a specific phobia the number of sessions required is 3-4.

What approach can I take to best achieve my goals?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaboration, and clients who are motivated to change (even if they don’t know how to initially), who engage in the process, and listen regularly to the provided relaxation recording, can often find they are feeling significantly more positive about things in around 4-6 sessions. Clients make the most progress and gain the best outcomes, when they make the commitment to become an active part of the process and the change they’d like to see in their lives.
